I have been commissioned to make a cake for a colleague's mother-in-law/sister-in-law's joint 90th & 60th birthday party. We were chatting on night shift a couple of weeks ago about Christmas, and I mentioned Colin had bought me a book on cake decorating. After a bit of cake chat I somehow offered to make the cake for the birthday do.
However, I have been feeling a little nervous this week, as I've only ever made cakes for close friends and family before, who I suppose wouldn't be too upset if I got it wrong. So I have felt the pressure has been on a bit to make a successful job!!!
She said that she wanted a "classy" cake, but left the design to me. So I eventually copied a Charles Rennie Mackintosh design from the internet onto a plaque and painted on a wee birthday message. The black piping looks ok from a distance, however on closer inspection, it's a bit wobbly due to my shaky hands (Nerves perhaps? Or should a blame it on the pregnancy?!)
Classy cake
All this cake decorating is exhausting, clearly I'm not the only one who's feeling it...

Your cake looks brilliant!!! I would like to try and make one like it so could you please post a link to the design in a reply on your blog so I can try and copy it please?
I love the colours too.
Thanks
Louise
Hi Louise, thanks for the lovely comment!
I didn't use a design as such, I copied the picture from a picture of a CRM mirror I found online -

I made the different coloured sections of glass out of coloured fondant, then stuck them to an ivory coloured plaque. Then piped round the whole thing with black royal icing to give the stained glass effect.
I painted the writing onto a separate plaque, copying the writing style from this site -

Good luck! Hope the piping is less wobbly than mine!!
That looks amazing Jeni! I'll need to chat to you about decorating tips sometime as I am already planning Colin's 1st birthday cake...
